Mumbai: Snap Inc. has announced the formation of Specs Inc. as a distinct, wholly owned subsidiary, marking a strategic milestone in its journey toward the public launch of its next-generation smartglasses, Specs, later this year.
The move is aimed at providing sharper operational focus and strategic alignment for the business, while enabling greater flexibility to pursue partnerships, explore capital opportunities including potential minority investments, and build Specs as a standalone brand. The subsidiary structure also supports clearer business valuation as the company prepares to scale the platform.
Snap has been developing Specs for over a decade with the goal of redefining how people interact with computers by integrating digital experiences directly into the real world. Unlike traditional screens that demand constant attention, Specs smartglasses use transparent lenses to overlay digital information onto physical surroundings, allowing users to interact naturally through hand gestures and voice commands.
The platform has already attracted interest from developers, who are building applications spanning learning, gaming, collaboration, and productivity—experiences designed to remain grounded in real-world environments rather than pulling users away from them.
Positioned as an alternative to screen-heavy devices, Specs are designed to foster presence and shared experiences. The technology enables users to interact with friends, family, and colleagues in immersive ways, from collaborative product design and educational simulations to interactive outdoor play.
The launch of Specs coincides with a pivotal shift in computing driven by artificial intelligence. The smartglasses feature a proprietary Intelligence System that adapts to users and their surroundings, helping complete tasks proactively while maintaining a strong focus on privacy. The goal, according to the company, is to create a computer that reduces friction and cognitive load by doing more work in the background.
Beyond usability, Snap sees long-term sustainability potential in the platform. By replacing certain physical objects with digital equivalents—such as whiteboards, instruction manuals, televisions, and toys—Specs could help reduce material consumption and expand access to everyday tools without additional resource extraction.
Nearly five decades after the introduction of the personal computer, Snap positions Specs as part of a new computing paradigm—one that prioritises human connection, contextual intelligence, and environmental responsibility. The company plans to unveil the next generation of Specs later in 2026 and has also announced active hiring to support the platform’s expansion.
