1 in 2 working Indians fear losing their jobs in the next 12 months: The World Economic Forum-Ipsos Survey

New Delhi: A new Ipsos Survey for The World Economic Forum of more than 12,000 working adults from 27 countries shows, 1 in 2 working adults (54%) fear losing their jobs in the next one year and 2 in 3 (67%) feel they can learn and equip themselves for the future in their current jobs. Interestingly, India too mirrors similar views – while 1 in 2 (57%) working adults worry about their jobs, 4 in 5 (80%) feel their present place of work can reskill them for future.

The fear is rampant across most markets. India is placed 15th in the pecking, with at least 57% urban adults saying they fear losing their jobs in the next 12 months. The markets most concerned about keeping their jobs were: Russia (76%), Spain (73%), Malaysia (71%), Mexico (68%), Peru (68%), Chile (66%), Poland (65%), Turkey (64%), Brazil (63%), South Africa (63%), Argentina (60%), Hungary (60%), South Korea (59%), Saudi Arabia (57%) and India (57%).

And the markets least worried about losing their jobs were of Germany (28%), Sweden (30%), Netherlands (36%), US (36%), Belgium (37%) and China (38%).

Reskill for future. How?

  • 4 in 5 working adults (80%) polled in India believe their current employer and place of work, can reskill and make them future ready for jobs.
  • 2 in 3 (67%) global citizens too feel their current employer itself can train and equip them for future.
  • Some of the markets that strongly endorse this view include Spain (86%), Peru (84%), Mexico (83%) and Saudi Arabia (80%). India is tied in at the 4th spot with Saudi Arabia.
  • And the countries that have polarized views and believe less in potential of reskilling with present employer include: Japan (45%), Sweden (46%) and Russia (48%).

“There is job anxiety due to the economic slowdown and due to long periods of shutdown; the collateral impact of the pandemic. Businesses have shutdown and the workforce trimmed by a number of employers. There is fear for future.

Further, most of the reskilling has taken place within jobs, where HR departments have upskilled employees for the next level or imparted specific training. It is natural for employees to repose confidence in their present employer,” says Amit Adarkar, CEO, Ipsos India.
