NBF applauds Delhi High Court Order on Andhra Pradesh News Channels Blackout Case
Share Share ShareShare

New Delhi: The News Broadcasters Federation commends Delhi High Court’s order for 15 multi-system operators to resume airing TV9 Telugu, Saakshi TV, 10TV, and NTV, which were suspended in Andhra Pradesh from June 6, 2024.

The order against the blackout in Andhra Pradesh upholds freedom of speech and expression, crucial in our democratic society.

The blackout of news channels like TV9 Telugu, Saakshi TV, 10TV, and NTV in Andhra Pradesh since June 6, 2024, amid election results raised concerns for press freedom, with reports of political pressure on cable operators to censor these channels due to a change in leadership.

Andhra Pradesh has over 65 lakh TV viewers. News channels on 62 lakh set-top-boxes were removed, depriving the audience of crucial information.

The High Court’s intervention underscores the importance of maintaining an open and transparent media environment, essential for the functioning of a healthy democracy.

The order mandates the immediate restoration of the affected news channels, ensuring that the people of Andhra Pradesh can once again access a broad spectrum of news and viewpoints.

At the Delhi High Court, TV9, submitted that the disconnection was illegal and against the interconnection agreement signed with the distribution companies, as per rules laid down by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI).

The News Broadcasters Federation supports the decision and urges authorities to promptly comply. They believe this ruling will be a precedent for press freedom and journalists’ rights in India.

NBF commend the Delhi High Court for its steadfast commitment to safeguarding constitutional rights and promoting a free and independent media. This decision is a victory for democracy and a reminder of the vital role that judicial oversight plays in preserving our fundamental freedoms.

The News Broadcasters Federation will persist in supporting journalists’ rights and information flow, urging government and regulators to prevent future blackouts and enable media freedom without interference.
