Cricket Enthusiasm soars for ICC Champions Trophy 2025 across India: Ipsos IndiaBus Survey
Share Share ShareShare

New Delhi: The Ipsos IndiaBus ICC Champions Trophy 2025 survey reveals that a significant 59% of Indians are interested in the upcoming ICC Champions Trophy 2025, while only 35% are uninterested, and 6% remain neutral. The survey further highlighted that excitement for the tournament is palpable across various demographics, with 81% of those interested expressing enthusiasm. Excitement levels remain high, with both men and women showing equal enthusiasm at 81%, while 89% of individuals in SEC A, 78% in SEC B, and 77% in SEC C are eager to watch the tournament. The highest excitement levels were observed in metro cities, where 92% expressed excitement.

Region-wise, excitement remains consistent, with the west and north at 83%, the east at 79%, and the south at 77%, all showcasing majority excitement for the event.

“Cricket is a great binding factor among citizens across demographics, regions, and social strata. After all, cricket is a religion in India, the sport with the highest stickiness. The world’s best teams playing in the ODI format is also a big draw among cricket lovers,” said Parijat Chakraborty, Group Service Line Leader, Public Affairs, Corporate Reputation, CSR and ESG, Ipsos India.

The excitement surrounding the 9th edition of the ICC Champions Trophy is further fueled by the participation of top 8 ranked national teams, qualified from the 2023 Cricket World Cup. Group A consists of India, Bangladesh, New Zealand, and Pakistan, while Group B includes Australia, England, South Africa, and Afghanistan, adding to the anticipation among cricket fans. Additionally, 66% of respondents expressed enthusiasm about the participating teams and players, while 30% indicated that the format and schedule of the tournament contributed to their excitement.

The preference for day-night and night matches is clear, with 36% of respondents favoring day-night matches and 21% preferring night matches, as compared to just 14% who opted for day matches.

As the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 progresses, with India having won both of the matches it played, Ipsos India asked respondents about India’s prospects of lifting the trophy. The results were mixed, with 49% expressing strong hope for India’s victory, 31% being more circumspect, and 20% feeling less hopeful about India winning the prestigious title.

An intriguing insight from the survey was the low level of awareness about the host nation of the ICC Champions Trophy 2025. Only 17% of respondents knew that Pakistan was hosting the tournament. A large 49% wrongly assumed India was the host, while 28% were undecided. A few respondents also incorrectly identified England (4%) and Australia (2%) as the host nation.

“Till about December 2024, India had not confirmed its participation and was insisting on a neutral venue. And the confirmation came almost 2 months before the kick off. Awareness building would have started much later. With sponsors being roped in and in tying up of loose ends. These could be some of the reasons for low awareness among citizens”, explained Chakraborty.

The Ipsos IndiaBus survey is conducted monthly and is a pan-India omnibus covering a wide range of topics. The structured questionnaire, involving over 2200 respondents from diverse demographics (SEC A, B, and C), is conducted in metros, Tier 1, Tier 2, and Tier 3 towns, providing a representative view of urban India. The survey is conducted face-to-face and online, with demographic and city-class weightings to ensure national averages are accurate.
