Tamil Nadu: Vietnamese electric vehicle manufacturer VinFast today officially inaugurated its first Indian EV assembly plant at SIPCOT Industrial Park in Thoothukudi, Tamil Nadu. The new facility marks a strategic milestone in VinFast’s international growth journey and underscores its long-term commitment to India — the world’s third-largest automobile market.
The inauguration ceremony witnessed the presence of Hon. Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu M K Stalin, Mr. Pham Sanh Chau, CEO – VinFast Asia, and senior state officials. Tamil Nadu now hosts VinFast’s third operational plant globally, and its first outside Vietnam, making India central to the brand’s ambitious global roadmap.
Spread across 400 acres, the state-of-the-art facility houses advanced production lines with world-class automation and technology standards. The complex includes a Body Shop, Paint Shop, Assembly Shop, Quality Control Center, and Logistics Hub, along with an auxiliary cluster for local suppliers to scale operations in the future.
The plant is set to generate 3,000–3,500 direct jobs, and many more through associated supply chains. This aligns with the state’s vision of becoming a regional manufacturing powerhouse and emerging as the “EV capital of South Asia.”
As part of the grand opening, Hon. CM M K Stalin also signed the first VF7 premium SUV, which rolled out from the facility’s assembly line.
In its first phase, VinFast Tamil Nadu will assemble two premium electric SUV models — VF 6 and VF 7 — with an initial capacity of 50,000 units per year, expandable to 150,000 units annually to meet growing domestic and export demands.
The Tamil Nadu facility plays a crucial role in helping VinFast move closer to its 2025 sales target of 200,000 vehicles and its 2030 goal of 1 million vehicles annually, reaffirming its mission to accelerate green mobility worldwide.
Pham Sanh Chau, CEO of VinFast Asia, said, “The VinFast Tamil Nadu plant marks a strategic milestone in our long-term commitment to the Indian market. It establishes a strong foundation for sustainable growth and positions us to offer high-quality, competitively priced electric vehicles to Indian consumers. Looking ahead, the facility will expand its production capacity to meet rising demand. We aim to develop it into VinFast’s largest export hub for South Asia, the Middle East, and Africa. In fact, we’ve already secured initial orders from several countries across these regions. In close collaboration with the Tamil Nadu government, VinFast is working to transform the area into the ‘EV capital of South Asia’—supporting both the dynamic domestic market and our broader regional ambitions.”
Beyond vehicle assembly, VinFast is developing a comprehensive EV ecosystem in India. This includes robust after-sales services, battery recycling, digital infrastructure, and supply chain localization. Key partnerships — with dealer groups, RoadGrid, myTVS, Global Assure, and BatX Energies — are already in motion to support seamless ownership experiences and circular production practices.
With this significant expansion, VinFast Tamil Nadu is set to become a cornerstone of both India’s clean mobility goals and the company’s global manufacturing strategy, cementing the country’s role in shaping the future of sustainable transportation.
