Mumbai: Adobe has announced a leadership transition, stating that Shantanu Narayen will step down from his role as Chief Executive Officer once a successor is identified. Narayen will continue to serve as Chair of the Board, ensuring continuity during the transition.
The announcement was made alongside Adobe’s Q1 fiscal 2026 earnings, where the company reported revenue and profit that exceeded market expectations. Despite the strong quarterly performance, Adobe’s shares slipped in extended trading following the leadership update, reflecting investor uncertainty around the transition.
To manage the succession process, Adobe’s board has formed a special committee led by Lead Independent Director Frank Calderoni, which will evaluate both internal and external candidates for the CEO role. The company has not specified a timeline for announcing Narayen’s successor.
Narayen has led Adobe since December 2007, overseeing one of the most significant transformations in the company’s history. During his tenure, Adobe shifted its business model from packaged software to a subscription-based cloud ecosystem, anchored by products such as Creative Cloud. The company also expanded its digital experience and document management businesses, strengthening its position across marketing technology and enterprise solutions.
In recent years, Adobe has increased its focus on generative artificial intelligence, launching tools such as Firefly as part of its broader push into AI-powered creative workflows.
Commenting on the development, Satya Nadella congratulated Narayen in a post on X, describing his leadership as empathetic and acknowledging his contributions to both Adobe and the wider technology industry. Nadella also thanked him for his friendship and mentorship over the years.
In a message shared with employees and stakeholders, Narayen said the company continues to have significant growth opportunities ahead and expressed confidence in Adobe’s future as it enters its next phase.
The leadership transition comes at a time when Adobe is navigating heightened competition in AI-driven creative tools and increasing investor scrutiny over how generative AI products will be monetised. Despite the challenges, Narayen’s tenure has been marked by strategic shifts and acquisitions that helped establish Adobe as a major player across creative software, document solutions and customer experience technology.
