Sony Pictures Entertainment plans layoffs across TV, film and corporate units amid strategic reorganization
Share Share ShareShare

Mumbai: Sony Pictures Entertainment is undertaking a major restructuring initiative that will result in hundreds of layoffs across its film, television, and corporate divisions, as reported by Variety.

According to sources cited in the report, the layoffs are expected to impact a “few hundred” employees from the company’s global workforce of approximately 12,000, and are currently underway, with further reductions anticipated in the coming months. As part of the restructuring, Colin Davis, EVP of Comedy Development, will also exit the company.

The restructuring is said to be a “targeted and strategic” move rather than a cost-cutting exercise, with the company sharpening its focus on key growth areas such as franchise strategy and brand extensions, anime, experiential formats, next-generation and platform-native content, as well as deeper integration within the broader Sony ecosystem, including video game adaptations.

Ravi Ahuja

The changes were communicated internally by CEO Ravi Ahuja in a memo to staff, as reported by Variety. “Over the past year, we have sharpened our strategy and clarified where we believe the greatest opportunities exist,” Ahuja wrote. “As we lean into those priorities, we need to operate with greater focus, speed, and alignment to strengthen our differentiated capabilities. To support our growth, we are aligning our organization with where the business is going — not where it has been. That requires changes to how we are structured and where we invest. With that, we are reducing roles in certain areas while increasing focus and investment in others that are most critical to our future. This means that some of our colleagues will be leaving the company. These are difficult decisions. They impact talented people who have contributed meaningfully to our work and culture. We are grateful for their contributions, and our P&O teams are committed to supporting them through this transition.”

As part of the reorganization, Sony’s Game Show Group will be merged with GSN under Suzanne Prete, while Sony Pictures Television’s nonfiction division will be brought under TV studios president Katherine Pope. Additionally, the company is shutting down VFX firm Pixomondo.

The restructuring comes shortly after Ahuja assumed the role of CEO in January, following the retirement of Tony Vinciquerra. Under his leadership, Sony is doubling down on franchise expansion and IP-led growth, including projects tied to PlayStation titles such as ‘The Last of Us’ and the upcoming ‘God of War’ series, alongside established franchises like ‘Spider-Man’, ‘Ghostbusters’, ‘The Boys’, and ‘Jeopardy!’.
