Kolkata: ABP Ananda, a Bengali news channel, celebrated a significant milestone this year with the 20th anniversary of its flagship event, Sera Bangali. Held on November 8, 2024, the event honoured twenty exceptional women from diverse fields including science, business, entertainment, sports, social justice, and more, whose contributions have broken barriers and set new benchmarks in their respective industries.
For two decades, Sera Bangali has stood as a beacon of inspiration, celebrating individuals who have not only excelled in their fields but also empowered others with their remarkable journeys. The 2024 edition of the event focused on women achievers whose stories epitomize courage, resilience, and excellence, marking a celebration of Bengal’s finest talent and accomplishments.
Among the distinguished honorees were actor Anasuya Sengupta, celebrated for her exceptional work in Indian cinema, and fashion designer Priyanka Mallick, recognised for her creative vision. Cinematographer Modhura Palit was applauded for her outstanding contributions to the film industry, while Dr. Anindita Jha and Monalisa Maity were honoured for their transformative work in healthcare and education, respectively.
In the realm of sustainability, Sumita Banerjee was lauded for her tireless environmental advocacy, while Nandini Bhattacharjee was celebrated for her activism in men’s rights and gender neutrality. Other pioneering women such as Commander Satovisa Bandhopadhyay, an accomplished pilot, and Dipta Ghosh, a cab driver challenging gender norms, were recognised for their trailblazing achievements. Tumpa Das, a funeral director, and Nandini Bhowmik, Bengal’s first female priest, were also celebrated for breaking barriers in unconventional careers.
The sports category saw the recognition of swimmer Sayani Das, competitive yogi Susmita Debnath, and archer Ankita Bhakat, who have brought pride to Bengal with their achievements. In business, Sandhya Saha, co-founder of Dada Boudi Biryani, and Rochita Dey, Director of Sreeleathers, were honoured for their leadership and entrepreneurial spirit.
The scientific community was well-represented with the recognition of Dr. Shanta Dutta, Director of the National Institute of Cholera and Enteric Diseases; Dr. Tanusri Saha Dasgupta, Director of SN Bose National Centre for Basic Sciences; and Dr. Sanghamitra Bandyopadhyay, Director of the Indian Statistical Institute, for their pioneering work in research and science.
Rimjhim Sinha was also acknowledged for her advocacy on women’s empowerment, particularly for her efforts following the RG Kar rape and murder case, with her iconic call, “night is ours.”
