New Delhi: In a move that The Wire has described as a clear violation of the Constitutional guarantee of freedom of the press, the Government of India has blocked access to the news website thewire.in across the country. According to Internet Service Providers, the block was ordered by the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology under the provisions of the IT Act, 2000.
In a public statement issued on May 9, 2025, The Wire condemned what it called “blatant censorship,” especially at a time when “sane, truthful, fair and rational voices and sources of news and information are among the biggest assets that India has.”
The Wire stated that it is taking all necessary steps to challenge what it considers an arbitrary and inexplicable move by the government. The organization also expressed gratitude to its readers, noting that their support has sustained the publication for the past 10 years.
Despite the block, The Wire affirmed its commitment to delivering truthful and accurate news, concluding its message with: “We will not be deterred from providing truthful and accurate news to all our readers. Satyamev Jayate.”
