Maharashtra Motor Vehicles Department launches 'The Buckle Hack' to turn commercial vehicles into Lifesaving Seatbelt Reminders
Share Share ShareShare

Maharashtra: In a bid to improve road safety across the state, the Maharashtra Motor Vehicles Department (MMVD) has unveiled an innovative initiative, The Buckle Hack. This creative design initiative aims to transform every commercial vehicle into a constant reminder to fasten seatbelts by incorporating buckle-shaped stickers into the reflective tape on vehicles. These stickers serve as an eye-catching visual cue for motorists, encouraging them to buckle up every time they take to the road.

Despite numerous awareness campaigns, reports indicate that only 25% of motorists in India fasten their seatbelts, contributing to 83% of fatalities among car occupants. This alarming statistic highlights the critical need for an effective solution to promote seatbelt usage and reduce the high number of casualties caused by not wearing a seatbelt.

Through The Buckle Hack, MMVD seeks to tackle this issue head-on by providing a constant and visible reminder of the importance of seatbelts, especially in commercial vehicles, where safety compliance is often overlooked. The initiative is part of the ongoing Road Safety Awareness Month and is being rolled out in various cities across Maharashtra, including Mumbai.

Speaking about the initiative, Bharat Kalaskar, Additional Commissioner, Motor Vehicles Dept., Govt. of Maharashtra, said, “People often forget to buckle up, and that is a big cause of casualties and fatalities. This is an all-important reminder of the importance of seat belts for our safety, and we want this initiative to reach every driver in the State of Maharashtra.”

The Buckle Hack effectively combines design and functionality by utilizing a simple yet impactful concept that turns the reflective tape, which is already present on commercial vehicles, into a dynamic road safety tool. The buckle-shaped stickers act as a constant, subtle reminder to buckle up, making it easier for drivers and passengers to remember the importance of this life-saving habit.

The initiative has garnered attention for its clever simplicity, aiming to spark a culture of responsible driving habits and reduce the risk of fatalities on the roads. By transforming commercial vehicles into moving reminders, the Buckle Hack serves as a visual cue that ensures road safety remains at the forefront of motorists’ minds.

The ongoing campaign is already being implemented across major cities in Maharashtra, and officials hope to expand its reach to every corner of the state.
