Meta expands AI
Share Share ShareShare

Mumbai: Meta is accelerating its push into subscription-based services with the worldwide launch of premium plans for Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp, alongside the introduction of a broader subscription ecosystem that will eventually operate under a new brand called “Meta One”.

The move signals the tech giant’s latest effort to diversify revenue streams beyond digital advertising as it ramps up spending on artificial intelligence and next-generation platform experiences.

Under the new offering, users can subscribe to Instagram Plus and Facebook Plus for $3.99 per month each, while WhatsApp Plus will be available for $2.99 per month. The paid plans are designed to provide enhanced functionality, greater customisation options and additional audience-growth tools for users who spend significant time on Meta’s platforms.

Announcing the rollout via Instagram, Meta’s Head of Product Naomi Gleit said the company intends to continue expanding the subscription portfolio with new features and eventually bring all premium offerings together under the Meta One umbrella.

Focus on Creators and Power Users

The subscription packages introduce a range of exclusive capabilities aimed at creators, influencers and highly engaged users.

Instagram Plus subscribers will gain access to advanced audience insights, story rewatch metrics, anonymous story previews, extended story durations, unlimited audience segmentation tools and profile customisation options. Facebook Plus users will receive similar benefits, including enhanced analytics, audience reach tools, custom app icons and animated reactions.

WhatsApp Plus takes a different approach by concentrating on messaging personalisation. Features include premium sticker collections, custom themes, personalised notification sounds, additional pinned chats and enhanced list-management capabilities.

Meta clarified that these new subscriptions are separate from Meta Verified, which will continue to focus on account authentication, impersonation protection and customer support services.

AI-Powered Subscription Plans on the Horizon

In parallel with the consumer-focused rollout, Meta is preparing to test a new category of AI subscriptions beginning next month.

The company will introduce Meta One Plus at $7.99 per month and Meta One Premium at $19.99 per month. The higher-tier offering is expected to provide access to more advanced AI capabilities, including increased computing resources, stronger reasoning performance for complex queries, and expanded image and video generation tools integrated across Meta’s applications.

Initial testing for the AI subscription plans will take place in Singapore, Guatemala and Bolivia before a broader rollout is considered.

Professional Tools for Businesses and Creators

Meta is also extending its subscription strategy to professional users through specialised plans targeted at creators and businesses.

The new professional subscriptions will debut in select markets including Saudi Arabia, Morocco, Thailand and Bangladesh. These offerings are expected to include enhanced content management tools, deeper audience analytics, improved discoverability across Facebook and Instagram, profile integration features and business-focused insights.

The initiative reflects Meta’s growing focus on monetisation opportunities beyond traditional advertising while providing creators and brands with tools to strengthen audience engagement and platform performance.

Reducing Dependence on Advertising

The subscription expansion arrives as Meta continues investing heavily in artificial intelligence infrastructure and products. The company has projected capital expenditure of as much as $145 billion this year, with a substantial portion allocated to AI development and computing capacity.

By introducing multiple paid offerings across its ecosystem, Meta is building a broader recurring-revenue business that complements its advertising operations while supporting its long-term AI ambitions.

The launch of Meta One and its associated premium services marks one of the company’s most significant subscription initiatives to date, positioning paid experiences as a larger component of Meta’s future growth strategy.
