New Delhi: The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has extended the timeline for stakeholders to submit comments and counter-comments on its consultation paper addressing the framework for satellite communication network authorisation and spectrum assignment.
The consultation paper, released on April 8, 2026, outlines regulatory approaches for granting authorisation to satellite communication network providers and mechanisms for spectrum allocation—an area gaining increasing importance amid the rapid evolution of space-based connectivity services.
Initially, the last date for submitting written comments was May 6, 2026, with counter-comments due by May 20, 2026. However, following requests from industry associations and stakeholders seeking additional time for detailed submissions, TRAI has revised the deadlines.
Stakeholders can now submit:
- Comments by May 13, 2026
- Counter-comments by May 27, 2026
The extension is expected to enable broader participation from industry players, including satellite service providers, telecom companies, and technology firms, many of whom are closely tracking policy developments in India’s satellite communications space.
The consultation is a critical step in shaping India’s satcom regulatory landscape, particularly as global and domestic players look to expand satellite broadband, direct-to-device services, and enterprise connectivity solutions in the country.
TRAI has advised stakeholders to submit their responses preferably in electronic format, while also providing contact details for further clarification on the consultation process.
The move underscores the regulator’s intent to ensure a comprehensive and inclusive feedback process as it works towards finalising a framework that could influence the future of satellite communications and spectrum management in India.
