#Layoffs

Layoffs are the flavour of the season from Twitter to Meta and more. The signs are ominous. We know that a lot of the Indian white collar workforce will take a hit if things go downhill in the US and other markets. We know that the trickle down will be way faster and thicker than the trickle down of prosperity when that happens. The first signs from the media – starting with a disappointing festive season for many – is that we will feel the heat. Here’s hoping that the theory of the Indian economy being insulated works.      

Meta confirms it’s firing 13% of its workforce — 11,000 people.

The depression that England’s ruthless chase of 168 in the semi-final brought upon Indian cricket fans was eased to some extent (or worsened depending on how good a sport one is) by the memes that followed. Chennai has received excess rain for this time of the year. On day one of the predicted three-day deluge, there is overwhelming appreciation for the stormwater drainage work done by Chennai Corporation and the attendant lack of flooding in many areas. ‘Before’ and ‘After’ pics abound. Yes, there are areas which are flooded even now. And of course there is politicisation of the flood handling, by more than one side. The neutral voices on the ground are grateful for the work done because we know what we endured in the past few years. What is also heartening to see is collaboration between government departments, the public and top tier institutions to handle the situation better.
