Mumbai: ‘Z’ is set to host the grand finale of the Zee Short Film Contest, marking the culmination of its first nationwide multilingual talent discovery platform aimed at identifying and nurturing emerging filmmakers from across the country.
Launched earlier this year, the Zee Short Film Contest has evolved into a large-scale storytelling initiative, providing aspiring creators an opportunity to showcase original short films shot entirely on smartphones. Open across eight Indian languages, the contest was designed to democratize filmmaking by making storytelling accessible to creators irrespective of geography, resources, or industry connections.
As the competition enters its final phase, a distinguished jury comprising some of India’s most celebrated filmmakers continues to guide and evaluate the initiative. The jury includes Anurag Kashyap for Hindi, Ravi Jadhav for Marathi, Nag Ashwin for Telugu, Srijit Mukherjee for Bengali, P. Samuthirakani for Tamil, Hemanth Rao for Kannada, and Lijo Jose Pellissery for Malayalam.
The finale will also feature an exclusive roundtable discussion moderated by acclaimed film journalist Rajeev Masand, where the jury members will share perspectives on evolving storytelling formats, regional cinema ecosystems, creative influences, and the future of Indian filmmaking.
The grand finale will be held at a premium hotel in Mumbai and will bring together emerging filmmakers, industry professionals, creative leaders, and stakeholders from across the entertainment ecosystem. Winners will be recognized across multiple categories, including Best Film, Best Actor, Best Cinematographer, Best Editor, Best Writer, Best Composer, Best Comedian, along with several special jury awards.
In a move aimed at amplifying visibility for emerging talent, the top films from each language category will be acquired by ‘Z’ and streamed on ZEE5. The films will also be showcased across the network’s television channels, including Zee TV, Zee Marathi, Zee Bangla, Zee Telugu, Zee Kannada, Zee Tamil, Zee Keralam, Zee Zest, and Zing. Additionally, one winner from each language category will receive a cash prize of ₹2 lakh.
Speaking on the initiative and the role of short-form storytelling, Anurag Kashyap said, “Short films remain one of the purest spaces for storytelling. They allow filmmakers to take risks, fail, experiment, and find their voice without compromise. This platform brings that spirit to a national stage.”
Hemanth Rao emphasized, “The future of cinema depends on how boldly we support experimentation. This initiative gives young filmmakers the confidence to explore and express without limitation.”
Sharing his perspective, Nag Ashwin said, “Some of the most exciting ideas come from new voices who are not constrained by format or convention. The accessibility of filmmaking today is helping unlock a new wave of imagination.”
Ravi Jadhav noted, “India’s strength lies in its regional storytelling traditions. What makes this initiative special is how it brings those diverse voices into a shared creative space where they can be seen and celebrated widely.”
Commenting on the changing nature of cinema, Srijit Mukherjee said, “Cinema is increasingly transcending language and geography. Platforms like this help ensure that strong stories, regardless of origin, find their audience.”
Lijo Jose Pellissery added, “Indian cinema is constantly evolving, and it is important to keep discovering voices that challenge, surprise, and expand our understanding of storytelling.”
Reflecting on the importance of authentic narratives, P. Samuthirakani said, “Stories rooted in lived experience often carry the deepest emotional truth. It is encouraging to see such voices being given space and recognition.”
As the Zee Short Film Contest approaches its grand finale, the initiative stands as a celebration of India’s storytelling diversity, providing emerging filmmakers with a national platform to showcase their talent while creating new opportunities for regional voices to reach wider audiences across television and digital platforms.
