New Delhi: The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) on Monday released a pre-consultation paper on infrastructure sharing in the broadcast distribution sector in an effort to reduce cost and facilitate better utilization of the available infrastructure.
Currently, the distribution platform operators (DPOs) establish and maintain their own infrastructure for distribution of satellite television services to the subscribers.
DPOs obtain the television channels from the broadcasters and deliver these channels to the subscribers through cable TV, Direct to Home (DTH) operators, and Head-End in The Sky (HITS) networks. There are seven DTH operators, two HITS operators, 700 multi-system operators (MSOs) and 60,000 cable operators in the country.
The authority has sought comments from various stakeholders by 23 June to identify all the likely issues before finalizing for exhaustive consultation with the stakeholders.
