Women are responsible, sincere, meticulous, and hardworking – these traits help them take more responsibilities at home or workplace: Anupama Singh, Carat India

This Women’s day, MediaNews4U.Com is acknowledging women leaders of the Media, Marketing, Broadcast and Advertising fraternity who have given more than expected.

Dentsu is the largest agency brand and fifth largest agency group in the world. We provide a wide range of services in eight business domains: Marketing Digital Marketing Creative Sphere Promotions Media Content PR Global Business.

In this segment Anupama Singh, Consultant – Content Management, Carat India shares her experiences and breaking the gender stereotypes and how she continues to inspire many other women who are true leaders in the making.

Journey 

My career in media began three decades ago as a media trainee in Lintas Advertising agency. As a fresher in the industry, without any background in this field, I have had an exciting journey so far, learning, growing and evolving, I still got a long way to go.

The media industry has evolved and grown as the times demanded and so did I. Starting as a voucher copy checker, I gradually progressed by working on each aspect of media functioning – media billing, operations, buying and planning. Today, I can proudly say that I glided from one role to the other, gaining a whole lot of experience while understanding the nuts and bolts of how this business works.

All this would not have been possible without the passion, perseverance and curiosity to learn and evolve as a professional. A fair share of the credit does go to my bosses for having seen the potential in me and giving me the opportunity to take on new challenges at every step of the journey. I have been supported by some incredible teammates across various organizations that I have worked at and was lucky enough to make some great friends who have stayed with me through thick and thin.

From the early stages of my career, I have had the good fortune of working closely with and learning from some very strong female personalities. Working with these leaders and peers has moulded and shaped me into a professional with concrete basics in media, great work ethics and lots of passion that later bloomed into a career in this field. My love for this field has also helped me step into the role of mentoring and teaching the young minds that have chosen Media as their specialization at media schools. At first, I wasn’t sure if I could be a good teacher/mentor, but the faith and belief of the lady Director of the Institute helped me take up this opportunity and I have enjoyed every bit of nurturing and mentoring my students.

Inspiration & Inspiring the Team

After a brief hiatus, when I got back to media as my current role, Consultant – Content Management in Carat, I never felt like I had taken a break from this field. It is like I have been injected with a fresh dose of vigour and spirit to take on this new responsibility, once again surrounded by inspiring women with strong minds, great passion and the sheer love for their work, who excel in every job that they do. I would like to translate all that I have gathered in these years to my teams or my mentees, not as a sermon but by leading through examples. I have always believed that the team is the reflection of the team lead. If the team lead can bring in passion, a positive attitude and healthy camaraderie within the team, they will scale heights together.

Over the years, the media industry has seen many women leaders whether at media agencies, at the media house end and as clients. They have been role models to so many budding talents in this industry who have followed the footsteps of these stalwarts and created a niche for themselves. Today too, you find female leaders at the helm of most leading media agencies / houses and top clients. This is a testimony to the fact that their sheer intellect, passion, tenacity and zeal to succeed has helped them achieve all the success in their respective fields.

Empowerment of Women

Women are born multi-taskers. Their intrinsic nature of playing various roles at any given point in time helps them organize and prioritize their lives marvellously. They are responsible, sincere, meticulous, and hardworking – all traits that help them take on more responsibilities at home or their workplace. At a workplace, you empower women by training, mentoring and promoting them into senior-level positions based on their talent and capability, having faith in them and supporting them along the way. But I believe we could truly empower women by encouraging their liberty to pursue their own preferences, to make decisions in any aspect of their lives, personal or professional, without condemning them or criticizing their choice with judgement. I think women empowerment is not just about encouraging women and their efforts, it is about recognizing their prerogative to build their lives themselves however they may choose and supporting them through their journey.
