Chennai : The revenues of Tamil Nadu Arasu Cable TV Corporation (TACTV) Ltd has increased manifold since its operations were revived by the present AIADMK regime, soaring to Rs 181.91 crore in 2014-15 from a mere Rs two crore in 2010-11.

According to the Information Technology department policy note tabled yesterday in the Tamil Nadu Assembly during the ongoing assembly session, the revenue of TACTV rose by 64.3 per cent between 2011-12 and 2014-15 in view of growing subscriber base.

When the AIADMK government took over in May 2011, the revenue for 2010-11 was only Rs two crore and this went up to Rs 64.8 crore in 2011-12. For the period 2014-15, the revenue stood at Rs 181.91 crore, the policy note said.

The spurt in the revenue was attributed to increasing subscriber base and tapping revenues from private local channels during the said period.

TACTV currently provides 90-100 channels in Chennai through local cable operators. In Chennai, it serves 3.40 lakh subscribers through 820 local cable operators.

TACTV serves 70.52 lakh subscribers through 26,246 local cable operators in Tamil Nadu. In September 2011, TACTV had a mere 4.94 lakh subscribers, the policy note said.

TACTV was set up in 2007 by the then DMK government as a multi-system operator to distribute cable TV, but became defunct later due to various reasons. It was revived by Chief Minister Jayalalithaa after the AIADMK came to power in May, 2011 with a share capital of Rs 25 crore.

TACTV has applied for the DAS licence to  operate in Chennai City and the same is being kept in pending for a very long time and its has triggered an uncertainty to the future of Arasu Cable TV Corporation .

The uncertainty has triggered a spurt in the number of new players applying for DAS licence in Chennai and Tamil Nadu. There has been number of new players feature the three lists released by I&B Ministry during August month.
