AI cannot mine journalism for free: Kalli Purie’s 9-point framework wins industry support

New Delhi: At a high-level gathering of Indian media leaders at the AI Impact Summit, Kalli Purie, Vice-Chairperson and Executive Editor-in-Chief of the India Today Group, on Monday issued a sharp call for fairness, accountability and reciprocity in how Artificial Intelligence systems use journalistic content, unveiling a nine-point charter that seeks enforceable norms for the news ecosystem.

Speaking at a session convened by the Digital News Publishers Association (DNPA) titled “AI and Media: Opportunities, Responsible Pathways, and the Road Ahead” at Bharat Mandapam, Purie warned that unchecked AI deployment risks hollowing out journalism if credible reporting is reduced to raw material for large language models without safeguards.

“Fair value for journalistic content is non-negotiable. We need transparency in how AI systems digest and metabolise news,” she said, positioning journalism as a core democratic institution that must remain accountable even as technology evolves.

A nine-point charter for AI–news balance

Purie’s proposed framework sets out nine principles to rebalance incentives between news creators and AI platforms:

  1. Fair value for journalistic content with transparency on AI usage

  2. Traceability and attribution as a democratic principle

  3. Recognition of journalism as a public good

  4. Rewarding socially impactful reporting

  5. True valuation of verified institutional content

  6. Severe penalties for AI hallucinations

  7. Ending reward–punishment asymmetry between legacy and social media

  8. Treating citizen attention as finite

  9. Reciprocity from Big Tech for accessing news and attention

Framing attention and verified content as “rare minerals” in the digital economy, Purie questioned what major technology platforms give back to the news ecosystem when they extract and monetise both at scale.

Journalism’s role beyond distribution

Purie argued that trusted news brands perform a function distinct from algorithmic distribution, particularly in a diverse media market like India.

“News and verified media brands shape opinion. In a country like India, where literacy levels vary, that responsibility must rest with accountable institutions, not anonymous algorithms,” she said, cautioning against an AI-mediated information order detached from editorial responsibility.

India Today’s ‘AI-first but human-led’ model

Underscoring that her stance is not anti-technology, Purie highlighted the India Today Group’s extensive AI adoption over the past two-and-a-half years, spanning AI anchors, digital clones, voice synthesis and AI-assisted storytelling.

She described the company’s workflow as an “AI sandwich”: human editorial intent at inception, AI as an assistive layer, and a human editor taking the final call.

“We don’t want to become one biscuit in an AI cookie-cutter world. We want to tell our stories, not AI stories,” she said, emphasising that accountability for AI outputs must always attach to a human decision-maker.

Warning on ‘digital imperialism’

Purie also flagged structural inequities in global platform–publisher relations, warning of what she termed “digital imperialism” — a scenario in which Indian journalism is scraped, summarised and monetised without compensation.

“Indian reporters go to the ground, invest resources and take risks to bring original stories. Influencers and AI summaries should not eat out on that labour for free,” she said, calling for paid use frameworks for original reporting by AI systems.

She additionally advocated a sovereign AI stack centred on consumer trust and local media sustainability.

Industry alignment on formalising norms

Purie’s intervention drew broad support from peers at the summit. Leaders from major Indian news organisations including The Hindu, The Times of India, Amar Ujala and Dainik Bhaskar expressed agreement on the need to formalise principles governing AI use of news content.

Her nine-point charter, Purie said, is intended as a starting framework to ensure AI strengthens rather than weakens credible journalism.

“If journalism is hollowed out now, the cost of decolonising later will be far higher,” she warned.

As AI reshapes media production, distribution and monetisation, the DNPA-convened session underscored a growing consensus within India’s news industry: the next phase of AI adoption must embed enforceable norms that protect trust, attribution and economic value in journalism.
