Mumbai: The 2026 FIFA World Cup significantly influenced global Internet traffic patterns, with match timings, streaming habits and fan engagement driving noticeable changes in online activity across countries, according to an analysis by Cloudflare.
Cloudflare, which operates a global network with more than 330 points of presence worldwide, analysed Internet traffic trends through its Cloudflare Radar platform to understand how the month-long tournament affected digital behaviour during June and July 2026.
The study highlighted how the World Cup remains one of the few events capable of creating a truly shared global experience, with fans across different regions changing their daily routines around major matches and storylines.
Cloudflare Radar, which tracks HTTP traffic, DNS activity, security trends and other Internet signals, examined traffic movements throughout the tournament to measure how football’s biggest event influenced online usage.
Match timings drove major shifts in Internet activity
One of the strongest factors affecting Internet traffic was the local kickoff time of matches.
Cloudflare found that games played during overnight and early morning hours, particularly between midnight and 8 a.m. local time, created the largest deviations from normal Internet activity. Fans staying awake or waking early to watch matches pushed traffic well above regular levels, with some countries experiencing more than double their usual activity.
Matches scheduled during normal daytime working hours had a much smaller impact because viewers were already likely to be online. Evening matches produced a moderate increase in traffic, especially on weekdays, as fans remained connected during periods when Internet usage would usually decline.
To measure these changes, Cloudflare established a baseline using the median Internet traffic levels recorded over the previous four weeks. Traffic during matches was then compared against this benchmark to identify increases and declines.
Time zones created different Internet patterns for the same match
The impact of kickoff times was visible when comparing the same match across different countries.
During the Round of 32 match between Brazil and Japan on June 29, 2026, Brazil’s 2–1 victory produced contrasting online behaviour. In Japan, where the match took place during overnight hours, Internet traffic rose sharply as fans stayed awake to watch. Traffic reached around twice the normal level.
In Brazil, where the match was played during regular daytime hours, Internet traffic fell below typical levels as fans shifted their attention away from regular online activities and focused on the game.
Cloudflare found a similar pattern in Bosnia and Herzegovina, where late-night matches generated major increases in Internet traffic, while evening games caused traffic to decline as viewers put aside their devices to concentrate on the match.
Argentina matches generated the strongest global Internet impact
Among all matches analysed, Argentina’s quarterfinal against Switzerland created the largest worldwide Internet traffic movement.
The match, which Argentina won 3–1 on July 11, changed global Internet traffic by a factor of about 1.26, ranking above the France versus Spain semifinal, which recorded an impact factor of 1.21.
Cloudflare measured the impact of each match by analysing traffic changes during the two-hour period after kickoff across countries with sufficient baseline data. The company focused on how much traffic moved away from normal levels, regardless of whether activity increased or declined.
Argentina also ranked as the team with the highest global Internet influence during the tournament. Matches involving the defending champions resulted in an average worldwide traffic shift of 1.17 times normal levels.
Strong global engagement was also recorded around teams including France, Brazil, Portugal, Morocco, Spain and Norway, with Norway benefiting from increased international attention around striker Erling Haaland.
Online betting activity increased during tournament
The World Cup also affected traffic patterns in the online gambling sector.
Cloudflare recorded an increase in requests to gambling industry websites compared with the month before the tournament. The company observed that online traffic patterns became more consistent after the tournament began, replacing the regular weekly fluctuations seen before the opening match.
The change was linked to the near-daily schedule of World Cup games, which kept fan engagement at elevated levels throughout the competition.
Streaming habits influenced country-level traffic trends
Cloudflare found significant differences in Internet behaviour depending on how fans accessed matches.
During the Algeria versus Austria group-stage match, Austria experienced an increase in traffic during halftime as viewers returned to their devices during the break. Algeria showed a different pattern, with traffic declining during halftime.
The analysis suggested that streaming played a major role in shaping these differences. Countries with higher levels of online streaming saw traffic rise sharply when matches began, fall during halftime and increase again when play resumed.
Cloudflare’s analysis of traffic by MIME type indicated that multimedia and video streaming requests contributed significantly to these changes.
Halftime and hydration breaks affected Internet usage
Even short pauses during matches influenced online behaviour, according to Cloudflare.
During halftime, most countries recorded increases in Internet traffic as viewers checked their phones while play was paused. Some countries, including Tunisia and Algeria, showed the opposite trend, with users remaining focused on streams and reducing other online activity.
Hydration breaks, despite lasting only around three minutes, also created measurable traffic changes. In many countries, Internet activity increased briefly when matches stopped and returned to previous levels once play restarted.
World Cup final created visible digital impact
The 2026 World Cup final also left a measurable mark on global Internet activity.
Cloudflare’s analysis showed that the final between Argentina and Spain contributed to traffic increases of up to 20 percentage points in both countries compared with similar periods.
The bronze medal match between England and France also resulted in higher Internet activity, although the impact was smaller.
Traffic patterns during the final closely followed the flow of the game, with changes visible around major moments including kickoff, halftime, hydration breaks and the final whistle.
Cloudflare Radar tracks global digital trends
The analysis demonstrates how major global events can influence Internet behaviour at scale. Cloudflare said its Radar platform provides insights into how cultural moments, sporting events and global developments affect online activity.
The company will continue monitoring Internet trends to understand how major events shape digital consumption patterns worldwide.
