Kolkata: Bharat Soka Gakkai (BSG), an organization dedicated to peace, culture, education, and sustainability, has successfully concluded a week-long Plastic Collection Drive in Kolkata from 7 to 14 October 2025. The initiative, launched at an inaugural event on October 6, brought together community members, environmental leaders, and sustainability advocates to promote responsible waste management and collective environmental action.
The launch event was graced by Punam Jaju (Former President & Chief Patron, SwitchON Foundation; Chairperson, Resource Recovery), who applauded BSG’s grassroots efforts. Other eminent guests included Ms. Karuna A. Singh (Regional Director, Asia – Earth Day Foundation) and Dr. Subrata Gupta, IAS (Former Secretary, Ministry of Food Processing Industries & Former Principal Secretary, Urban Development Corporation).
Across Kolkata, individuals and families joined hands to collect plastic waste for recycling — amassing an impressive 2.5 tonnes of plastic in a single week. The waste was responsibly deposited at local collection hubs and processed through certified recycling partners, demonstrating how small, mindful actions can lead to meaningful environmental outcomes.
“It is truly inspiring to see an organization like Bharat Soka Gakkai mobilize its members to take ownership of sustainability at the grassroots level. The Plastic Collection Drive in Kolkata is not just about reducing waste – it’s about awakening environmental consciousness in every individual,” said Chief Guest Punam Jaju.
Vishesh Gupta, Chairperson, Bharat Soka Gakkai, added, “This drive is a wonderful example of how ordinary citizens can come together to create extraordinary impact. When individuals act with sincerity and purpose, the cumulative result is transformative for society and for the Earth.”

The Kolkata initiative is part of BSG’s larger national campaign promoting ‘Sustainable Human Behaviour (SHB)’—a philosophy that encourages daily conscious choices for a greener future. This marks BSG’s third major Plastic Collection Drive since 2023, following impactful editions in Delhi (27 tonnes) and Mumbai (10 tonnes).
BSG plans to continue expanding the movement across more Indian cities, inspiring communities to act collectively for a cleaner, plastic-free, and sustainable India.
