Mumbai: The Global Chess League (GCL), a joint initiative of Tech Mahindra and FIDE, has announced Bengaluru as the host city for Season 4 of the tournament, marking another milestone in the league’s mission to redefine chess as a global spectator sport.
Scheduled to commence on September 3, 2026, the upcoming season will bring the world’s premier chess league to India’s technology capital, blending elite competition with a city known for innovation, youth culture, and global connectivity.
Since its launch, the Global Chess League has transformed the traditional image of chess through a franchise-based format featuring mixed-gender teams, rapid-fire matches, packed arenas, immersive fan experiences, and strong digital engagement. The league has positioned chess as a high-energy spectator sport designed for modern audiences.
Season 4’s move to Bengaluru comes at a time when India’s influence on the global chess landscape continues to grow, driven by emerging talent and rising fan engagement.
Commenting on the announcement, Gourav Rakshit, Commissioner of the Global Chess League, Tech Mahindra Global Chess League, said, “The Global Chess League was created to transform chess into a truly global spectator sport. With Bengaluru preparing to host the next chapter of the tournament, the Global Chess League aims to further strengthen chess’ appeal among younger and digitally connected audiences, while expanding the sport’s reach across international markets.
