Meesho acquires Kirana Club to expand digital commerce access for India’s 13 million+ Kirana retailers

Acquisition strengthens Meesho’s presence in India’s $650 billion grocery market and broadens its B2B commerce ambitions

Bengaluru: Meesho, India’s largest e-commerce platform by Annual Transacting Users and Orders, has announced the acquisition of Kirana Club, a community-led B2B commerce platform built to serve small and underserved kirana retailers across Bharat.

The acquisition marks a strategic move by Meesho to deepen its presence in India’s retail ecosystem and extend digital commerce access to millions of kirana stores that continue to anchor consumption across the country. The transaction also strengthens Meesho’s position in India’s estimated $650 billion grocery market, where kirana and general trade channels account for over 90% of consumption.

Founded in 2020 by Anshul Gupta and Aishwarya Jain, Kirana Club has emerged as one of India’s largest digital communities for kirana owners, with more than 4.1 million registered retailers. Its mobile-first marketplace enables retailers to discover, compare and source FMCG and grocery products directly from brands while engaging through local-language insights and community-driven discussions.

Following the acquisition, Kirana Club will continue to operate independently within the Meesho group.

Extending the Marketplace Model to Bharat’s Kirana Economy

The acquisition reflects Meesho’s strategy of applying its asset-light commerce model beyond consumer retail into the B2B ecosystem.

While Meesho scaled internet commerce access for consumers through its marketplace-led approach, Kirana Club has built a zero-inventory, zero-field-sales B2B marketplace focused on empowering small retailers outside India’s metro markets.

Commenting on the acquisition, Vidit Aatrey, Chairman, Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, Meesho, said, “At Meesho, we have always believed that technology can expand access and opportunity for underserved users across India. Kirana Club has built deep trust among small retailers through its asset-light and community-first approach. We see significant opportunities to strengthen access, transparency and product discovery for kiranas in underserved markets across India, and also extend this to all forms of B2B retail across India.”

Addressing Fragmented Supply Chains Across Bharat

India’s grocery market is valued at approximately $658 billion, with kirana and general trade channels contributing nearly 91% of total market share. Despite this scale, millions of retailers across Tier 3, Tier 4 and rural India continue to operate through fragmented sourcing systems, limited assortment availability and opaque pricing structures.

These challenges extend across broader retail categories valued at nearly $400 billion, where supply chains remain largely informal and relationship-driven.

Kirana Club was created to address these inefficiencies through a digital-first model that combines commerce, transparency and community engagement.

Accelerating Growth Through Meesho’s Ecosystem

By leveraging Meesho’s national logistics network, supplier ecosystem and marketplace infrastructure, Kirana Club is expected to enhance fulfilment capabilities, expand product categories and accelerate retailer acquisition across underserved markets.

Speaking on the partnership, Anshul Gupta, Co-founder and CEO, Kirana Club, said, “Kirana Club was built on a simple belief: small retailers in Bharat deserve the same access, transparency and efficiency as modern retail. Over the last few years, we have built deep trust with kirana retailers by combining community, local insights and commerce. Meesho understands Bharat at scale and shares our belief in serving underserved users through technology. With this partnership, we can accelerate our mission of building India’s most trusted digital commerce network for kiranas.”

The acquisition has been completed at an approximate transaction value of ₹202 crore and provides a full exit to existing investors while retaining founder leadership and ensuring operational continuity.

With this move, Meesho expands its efforts to enable entrepreneurship and strengthen digital commerce infrastructure for millions of kirana retailers across India’s next phase of retail growth.
