Farewell to a True Gentleman: Ramesh Narayan Remembers Dr. Bhaskar Das

Farewell to a True Gentleman: Ramesh Narayan Remembers Dr. Bhaskar Das

The passing of Dr. Bhaskar Das, or Bhaskar Da as many of us fondly called him, is a monumental loss to the media and advertising industry. His influence, warmth, and indomitable spirit will be sorely missed, but his legacy will live on in the memories of all those he inspired.

I had the pleasure of knowing Bhaskar well since 2001, when he became part of the extended core team — alongside the late Pradeep Guha, Goutam Rakshit, and me — that steered AdAsia 2003 in Jaipur. Those were exciting times, and Bhaskar’s unique ability to bring people together, solve complex challenges, and drive consensus was invaluable to the event’s success.

Over the years, I had the privilege of crossing paths with him often, and each encounter left a lasting impression. I fondly recall him, as President of the Advertising Club, presenting me with an award for being the first Indian to judge the finals of the Effies in New York. His enthusiasm, sincerity, and pride in the achievements of his peers were always evident. He genuinely believed in celebrating the success of others and was ever ready to offer a helping hand.

Fast forward to 2021, when Bhaskar interviewed me on Republic TV during the launch of my book. I was struck once again by his warmth, his thoughtful questions, and his ever-present smile. There was an ease about him that made conversations flow naturally, whether it was a casual chat or a formal industry interaction.

One of my fondest memories of Bhaskar Da is from the time he was inducted into the IAA Hall of Fame. I was tasked with writing his citation, and when I called to share the news with him, his response was quintessential Bhaskar — gracious, humble, and humorous. He said he wasn’t sure which was the bigger honor: being inducted into the Hall of Fame or having me write his citation. That was who Bhaskar Da was — a man who never let accolades define him, always valuing relationships over recognition.

Even in his final days, Bhaskar Da remained the consummate gentleman. On December 11, 2024, he called me to say he wouldn’t be able to attend a party I was hosting that evening because he was being admitted to the hospital. True to his nature, he was apologetic about missing the event, even while dealing with a personal health crisis. That was the last conversation we had.

Bhaskar Das stood out not only for his brilliance and industry acumen but also for his sartorial style. His colorful clothes reflected his vibrant personality, and his iconic hats became a part of his persona. Yet, beneath the bright hues and stylish attire was a man of substance — deeply intellectual, unfailingly courteous, and always willing to give back to the industry he loved so dearly.

Today, as we bid farewell to Bhaskar Da, we celebrate a life well-lived. He worked tirelessly for every industry responsibility he took on, and his contributions to the media and advertising world will not be forgotten. More importantly, he leaves behind a legacy of kindness, grace, and humility — qualities that are often rare in a competitive world.

Bhaskar Da, we will miss your presence dearly. Your smile, your wisdom, and your friendship have left an indelible mark on all of us who were fortunate enough to know you.

Rest in peace, my friend. Your legacy will live on in the hearts of all your well-wishers.
