Mumbai: In a landmark development for Indian sports, the inaugural edition of the Rugby Premier League (RPL) has secured GMR Group as its Title Partner. Titled the GMR Rugby Premier League (GMR RPL), the tournament will take place in Mumbai from June 15 to June 29, 2025, at the Shahaji Raje Bhosale Sports Complex (Andheri Sports Complex).
Organised by Rugby India in collaboration with GMR Sports, this first-of-its-kind franchise-based Rugby 7s tournament marks a major milestone in the evolution of rugby in India. The league will feature six founding franchises, welcoming top-tier talent from around the globe, including players from New Zealand, Australia, South Africa, Fiji, Argentina, Great Britain, Ireland, USA, and Spain, along with additional representation from Canada, Hong Kong, and Germany. Complementing the international lineup, 30 Indian players will compete in the tournament, selected from a pool of 71 at auction.
GMR Group, one of India’s leading conglomerates with a strong track record in infrastructure and sports development, brings its legacy of nurturing athletic excellence to this ambitious venture. The group’s involvement underscores a long-standing commitment to building sustainable sporting ecosystems through grassroots and professional-level support.
Rahul Bose, President, Rugby India, commented on the partnership:
“Rugby India and the Rugby Premier League are delighted to have GMR join us as the Title Sponsors for what is a very important opening season of the tournament. This partnership only further strengthens the mutual belief and optimism about the future of Rugby in India, and we are confident that this partnership will stand the test of time.”
As the first franchise-style Rugby 7s league in the world, the GMR RPL aims to amplify the sport’s visibility in India, reaching new audiences and inspiring youth participation. With a compelling mix of international and domestic talent, high-octane competition, and a strong broadcast strategy, the GMR Rugby Premier League is set to redefine rugby in the country.
