Mumbai: NEWME has released “The Confidence Edit,” a nationwide survey exploring how Gen Z women across India are redefining ambition, independence, happiness and identity ahead of International Women’s Day.
Based on responses from over 1,000 young women, the study offers insights into a generation that is increasingly challenging traditional expectations—prioritising balance over burnout, independence over approval, and self-expression over conformity.
Vinod Naik, Co-founder, NEWME, said, “As a brand that works closely with Gen Z women, we wanted to understand how they are thinking about success, independence and happiness today. What emerges from this survey is a generation that is ambitious but also deeply self-aware. Women today are not simply following old definitions of success—they are rewriting them in ways that feel more personal and authentic.”
Peace Emerging as the New Definition of Success
One of the key insights from the survey highlights how young women are redefining ambition and success. Nearly one in four respondents said they prioritise peace over perfection, signalling a shift away from traditional hustle-driven definitions of success. For many participants, success today is less about constant achievement and more about creating a life that feels balanced, sustainable and self-directed.
Independence Goes Beyond Finances
Independence continues to remain a major aspiration among Gen Z women, but the survey suggests that it is now viewed as both financial and emotional freedom. An overwhelming 86% of respondents said they want to be financially as well as emotionally independent, indicating a generation unwilling to compromise personal autonomy for stability.
Decision-making patterns are also evolving. While many respondents discuss major life choices with family, fewer than one in five said family alone has the final say, pointing towards growing self-determination among young women.
Solo Travel Becoming Mainstream
The findings also reveal increasing confidence around mobility and personal freedom. More than 70% of respondents said they are comfortable travelling solo, either spontaneously or with prior planning.
While safety remains the top concern, ranking higher than budget or family reactions, the results indicate that solo travel is increasingly viewed not as a bold or rebellious act but as a natural extension of independence.
Fashion as a Form of Self-Expression
The survey also highlights changing attitudes toward fashion, identity and self-expression. Nearly 70% of respondents said they would dress the same even if nobody could see them, suggesting that fashion is increasingly driven by personal expression rather than external validation.
At the same time, almost 90% of participants said they feel comfortable expressing themselves publicly—whether through clothing, opinions or lifestyle choices—reflecting a generation that is confident about how it presents itself to the world.
Confidence Growing, Yet Pressures Persist
Despite rising self-confidence, the survey indicates that many young women continue to experience emotional pressures. Nearly 40% of respondents said they feel guilty about not meeting expectations, making it the most common source of guilt—far ahead of spending on themselves or taking time off.
Respondents also pointed to challenges such as asking for what they want, saying no, or dealing with being misunderstood, underscoring the complex emotional negotiations that often accompany independence.
Happiness in Everyday Moments
The survey also reveals a shift in how happiness is defined. For 43.3% of respondents, everyday joy comes from simple acts such as treating themselves, followed by learning something new or spending time with friends.
The findings suggest that fulfilment for today’s Gen Z women is increasingly rooted in small, everyday moments of self-reward and personal satisfaction, rather than solely in major life milestones.
With “The Confidence Edit,” NEWME aims to highlight the evolving aspirations and mindset of India’s Gen Z women, offering a deeper understanding of how this generation is reshaping ideas of success, independence and happiness.
