Kozhikode: Mathrubhumi Group, Kerala’s largest media house, has launched the National Thought Leadership Awards to commemorate the legacy of late M P Veerendra Kumar by recognising individuals whose work contributes significantly to society and nation-building.
For the inaugural edition of the award, noted social activist Sunitha Krishnan, Co-founder of Prajwala, was honoured for her outstanding contributions to social justice, women’s empowerment, and combating human trafficking. Her work in rehabilitation, advocacy, and safeguarding vulnerable communities has had a far-reaching impact on social transformation across India.
The award was presented by Justice Chandru (Retd.), former Judge of the Madras High Court, in the presence of Jairam Ramesh, Member of Parliament, Rajya Sabha, and former Union Minister.
Other dignitaries attending the ceremony included M V Shreyams Kumar, Managing Director, Mathrubhumi Group; P V Chandran, Chairman and Managing Editor, Mathrubhumi Group; P V Nidhish, Joint Managing Editor; and Mayura Shreyams Kumar, Director – Digital Operations, Mathrubhumi Group.
The award seeks to celebrate the values and vision championed by M P Veerendra Kumar, whose contributions to public life, literature, and leadership continue to inspire generations.
Receiving the award, Sunitha Krishnan, said, “she was humbled to receive the honour, and spoke about the global rise of the $150 billion human trafficking industry. The transition of child exploitation into digital spaces and apps makes tracking offenders harder. Statistics show millions of children are being sold globally, with technology providing anonymity to predators. A powerful appeal to society to stop being silent and take a stand against child abuse as a personal and societal crisis rather than an isolated incident”.
Speaking on the occasion, M V Shreyams Kumar said, “The legacy of M P Veerendra Kumar continues to inspire meaningful conversations around leadership, social commitment, and nation-building. This award reflects those enduring ideals. Sunitha Krishnan’s remarkable journey of courage and service makes her a deserving recipient.”
The commemorative event and award ceremony brought together eminent personalities from diverse sectors to celebrate leadership, vision, and social impact, reinforcing Mathrubhumi Group’s commitment to recognising individuals who drive meaningful change and contribute to the larger public good.
