First taste: Campa Cola’s flavours and fizz get mixed reactions, brand scores in stores with 1+1 offer

Dipstick suggests that the cola variant might give Coca Cola a run for its money. But despite the onset of summer, distribution is yet to fall in place.

MediaNews4u.com got people drinking. Drinking Campa Cola, that is – in cola, lemon and orange flavours. Across Bengaluru, Chennai and Hyderabad. 

While some say this is Reliance Consumer Products’ second shot at the cola space after Yeah!, the acquisition of Campa Cola was expected to play up the ‘Indian brand’ story. The marketing communication is yet to reveal itself but what is obvious is the war on store shelves. 

Inside Reliance’s own stores, while we see competitors offering a 2+1, Campa Cola is available with a 1+1 offer. Seven outlets MediaNews4u.com and its guest emissaries visited were out of stock. Several outlets had run out of the cola, but the lime and orange flavours were available. ‘Buy one get one free’ seemed to be working.

But what did consumers think of the taste? After all, that is where Thums Up stands out in the category. Limca has its fans and so do Sprite and 7Up. Fanta too has its following. 

We got a cross section of people to tell us what they thought. Several went off record, while some were happy to pose with the bottle. 

Among those who commented off record on the cola flavour, a majority felt that it could be an alternative to Coca Cola, but not Pepsi or Thums Up. This is by no means a scientific survey, but a first reaction.

Yes, Lime & Lemon flavour. The drink is less fizzy compared to 7Up. 7/10.

Yes, Lime & Lemon flavour. At the beginning it tastes like lemon and then more like Sprite with less fizz. 9/10.

Yes, because it is cheaper.

Yes, tasted the lime and lemon flavour, too sugary when compared to Sprite or 7Up.  5/10 – not for the taste or anything, but for the price.

Will it replace your soft drink brand?

Definitely this will not replace my choice of existing cola drink, until there is low sugar or sugar-free benefit.
