Mumbai: In the lead-up to Earth Day 2026, the Maharashtra Institution for Transformation (MITRA), in collaboration with Earth Day Network India, has issued a landmark declaration and call to action to green Maharashtra—positioning the state as a national model for large-scale environmental transformation.
The declaration outlines three immediate pathways for impact: advancing energy audits across government and private sectors to improve efficiency; mobilizing artists and creators to amplify climate action; and to mark the 56th anniversary of Earth Day, a statewide pledge to plant 56 lakh trees—engaging citizens, institutions, and communities in collective environmental responsibility, aligned with global Earth Day priorities.
Aligned with this year’s Earth Day theme, Our Power, Our Planet, Envision Energy and EARTHDAY.ORG will host a high-profile international awards ceremony honoring 20 Our Power, Our Planet Stars—leaders advancing clean energy, reducing fossil fuel dependence, and driving sustainable innovation. Supported by MITRA and the International Advertising Association, the event recognizes outstanding individuals and institutions across Asia and Africa. Kathleen Rogers notes, “The transition to clean energy is already underway—led by these committed changemakers.”
The evening will also feature a high-level fireside conversation bringing together leaders from policy, industry, and the creative sectors to explore how cross-sector collaboration can accelerate climate action and deliver scalable impact. The discussion will include representatives from MITRA and Envision Energy, alongside noted creative voices such as Imtiaz Ali and Ram Sampath.
This will be followed by the launch of Sustainable Fashion for a Better Tomorrow, an exclusive publication by Earth Day Network India showcasing initiatives from 24 countries across Asia. The publication highlights innovative approaches transforming the fashion industry toward sustainability—demonstrating how responsible design, production, and consumption can redefine the sector while affirming that style and sustainability can thrive together.
Adding a powerful cultural dimension, the evening will feature a headline performance by Sona Mohapatra, whose artistry will set the tone for reflection, inspiration, and collective commitment to the planet. Her performance will seamlessly bridge cultural expression with environmental consciousness, enriching the evening’s narrative with both purpose and impact.
With a strong blend of policy direction, industry participation, and cultural engagement, the Mumbai commemorations underline a growing momentum toward integrated, large-scale climate action in India and beyond.
