HistoryTV18 explores Bruce Lee’s mysterious death in new documentary special

Mumbai: HistoryTV18 is set to premiere History’s Greatest Mysteries: What Killed Bruce Lee?, a documentary special examining the enduring mystery surrounding the death of martial arts legend Bruce Lee, on Monday, July 20, at 9 PM.

Timed to coincide with the 53rd anniversary of Bruce Lee’s death, the special revisits the circumstances surrounding the actor and martial artist’s sudden passing on July 20, 1973, when he died at the age of 32 in Hong Kong, shortly before the release of his landmark film Enter the Dragon.

Hosted by Oscar and Golden Globe nominee and six-time Emmy Award winner Laurence Fishburne, the programme examines the official medical findings, conflicting accounts and multiple theories that have continued to fuel debate over Lee’s death for more than five decades.

The documentary revisits the conclusion that Lee died from cerebral oedema, or swelling of the brain, while exploring possible contributing factors, including repeated head injuries, an adverse reaction to medication, heatstroke and underlying medical conditions. It also examines newer medical research suggesting that an imbalance of water and sodium levels may have played a role.

Beyond the medical evidence, the special explores speculation surrounding Lee’s personal life, professional relationships, alleged links to organised crime and rivalries within the martial arts community, assessing these claims alongside historical records and expert analysis.

HistoryTV18 said the documentary combines expert commentary, archival footage and investigative storytelling to offer viewers a comprehensive look at one of the entertainment industry’s most enduring mysteries.

The broadcaster said the programme aims to revisit the unanswered questions surrounding Bruce Lee’s final hours while examining how the mystery surrounding his death has become an integral part of his lasting cultural legacy.

History’s Greatest Mysteries: What Killed Bruce Lee? will premiere on Monday, July 20, at 9 PM, exclusively on HistoryTV18.
