JioStar Launches JioHotstar, Merging JioCinema and Disney+ Hotstar to Create India’s Largest Streaming Platform

JioHotstar will operate on a dual-revenue model, offering both free, ad-supported streaming and paid subscriptions starting at ₹149. Existing JioCinema and Disney+ Hotstar subscribers will transition to the new service.

Mumbai: JioStar, the joint venture between Viacom18 and Star India, has launched JioHotstar, integrating JioCinema and Disney+ Hotstar into a single streaming platform. With a content library of nearly 3 lakh hours, live sports rights, and a user base exceeding 50 crore, the platform is set to become the largest in India’s digital streaming market.

The launch comes as part of a larger industry trend toward consolidation and scale in India’s highly competitive OTT market. The new platform will offer both ad-supported free content and paid subscriptions starting at ₹149, aiming to increase accessibility while expanding revenue streams.

The transition for existing JioCinema and Disney+ Hotstar subscribers is designed to be seamless, ensuring continuity in user experience while introducing new features and content offerings.

JioHotstar’s content strategy includes:

  • Hollywood partnerships: Exclusive content from Disney, NBCUniversal’s Peacock, Warner Bros. Discovery HBO, and Paramount, making it one of the most comprehensive international content aggregations in the OTT space.
  • Indian entertainment: TV programming, reality shows, regional cinema, originals, and anime across 10 languages.
  • Live sports rights: Cricket remains a key driver, with ICC tournaments, IPL, WPL, and domestic leagues. Additionally, global sporting events like the Premier League and Wimbledon expand its sports portfolio.
