“The South Doesn’t Follow Trends—It Creates Them”: Krishnan Kutty on JioHotstar’s Big Bet on Regional Storytelling
Share Share ShareShare

Chennai: At a high-energy media roundtable, Krishnan Kutty, Head – Entertainment (South), JioStar, positioned South India as the country’s most vibrant creative engine—one that doesn’t follow trends but creates them. Reflecting on an “extremely interesting ten months,” he described the region’s film and series ecosystem as a cultural force reverberating across India. Blockbusters like RRR, Baahubali, and Kantara, alongside innovative scripted and non-fiction formats, demonstrate the South’s ability to blend authenticity with mass appeal. Kutty emphasised that the more culturally rooted a story is, the more widely it travels—an insight validated by the national success of hyperlocal Southern narratives.

Unprecedented Engagement and Nationwide Breakouts

Data shared at the session revealed just how dramatically South content is shaping India’s streaming landscape. Tamil series Heartbeat crossed 100 million viewing hours in a month, a milestone rarely seen in the country. Films like Loka, Mere, Todrum, Tourist Family, and Manjumal Boys have found audiences far beyond linguistic borders, while shows such as Chutney Sambar (Tamil) and Kerala Franchise (Malayalam) have broken out in Telugu-speaking markets, Maharashtra, and Delhi. Kutty noted that only six pin codes in India have not streamed South content in recent months—a testament to the category’s nationwide pull. South viewers also stand out for their unmatched consumption intensity, spending 70% more time on the platform, exploring 50% more genres, and watching 20% more titles than the national average.

Bigg Boss and High-Scale Formats Show the Power of Connection

Among high-engagement formats, Kutty described Bigg Boss as a cultural phenomenon “only exceeded by IPL” in scale. The franchise outperforms every other streaming property in the South, reflecting the outsized potential when a format connects deeply with regional audiences. Series like Heartbeat further reinforce this trend, demonstrating that strong storytelling can unlock unprecedented scale. Kutty noted that the creative ambition he sees in the South is unlike anywhere else, recalling a recent visit to Kerala where over 300 innovative format ideas were pitched—proof of a market driven by imagination, experimentation, and a hunger to disrupt.

South UnBound: A ₹4,000 Crore Commitment to the Region’s Creative Future

Under its new South UnBound initiative, JioHotstar announced a ₹4,000 crore investment in South India over five years—the largest commitment by any platform in the region. Kutty shared that 75% of all original South content commissioned today comes from JioHotstar, reinforcing the platform’s unmatched focus on nurturing this ecosystem. Over 500 creators have already been engaged across scripted, non-fiction, and film projects, with tomorrow’s unveiling of a 25-title slate marking the next phase of this expansion. JioHotstar will also announce a partnership with the Government of Tamil Nadu to develop creative labs, internships, and talent programmes aimed at strengthening the state’s entertainment infrastructure. “Give us a great story,” Kutty concluded, “and the opportunity to reach over 200 million subscribers is yours.” With scale, ingenuity, and a deep creative reservoir, the South, he said, will shape the future of Indian storytelling.
