Winning the Trust of the Electorate – Dance of Democracy
Share Share ShareShare

In the intricate dance of democracy, particularly in a vibrant country like India, the act of voting is not just a right—it is a profound display of trust. When citizens cast their votes, they place their hopes, aspirations, and trust in the hands of their elected candidates. This trust is built slowly through the three foundations of trust—consistently creating capacity to trust in the electorate, showcasing positive intent, and demonstrating relevant competence. However, the trust can be swiftly dismantled if any of these foundational elements are perceived as compromised. Observing Rahul Gandhi’s ascent from his earlier image to the one today, I can confidently state that he epitomizes the 10 Brand Behaviors of Trust and has been systematically, perhaps through intuitive direction, building it step by step.

The 10 Brand Behaviors of Trust coalesce into three Foundations of Trust, of which the first foundation, ‘Building Capacity to Trust,’ consists of ‘Display of Empathy,’ ‘Shared Interests,’ and ‘Non-Threatening Ambience.’ The second foundation, ‘Perception of Positive Intent,’ includes ‘Enthusiasm,’ ‘Altruism,’ and ‘Demonstrated Sincerity.’ The last Foundation of Trust comprises ‘Accepting Responsibility,’ ‘Perceived Competence,’ ‘Commanding Respect,’ and ‘External Appearance.’

The literal and figurative journey of Rahul Gandhi’s trust-building began with the Bharat Jodo Yatra, the citizen-connect initiative he that started in September 2022. His demeanor and behavior with the citizens who walked part of the way with him during his arduous 4000+ kilometer walk demonstrated his Empathy, and Shared Citizens’ Interests displayed through his affectionate and positive responses to them, and his universal accessibility showed Non-Threatening Ambience. By the end of the Bharat Jodo Yatra, even those politically opposed to him began to view him more positively.

Perhaps innately understanding what trust is, he grounded the Second Foundation of Trust, ‘Creating Perception of Positive Intent.’ Where most would be disillusioned, his illegal ouster from Parliament gave him renewed vigor and rekindled his spirit and resolve. His reactions since then have displayed his ardent ‘Enthusiasm’ toward his goal, also showcasing almost friend-like ‘Altruism’ and ‘Demonstrated Sincerity’ in each of his engagements with the citizenry. His continued positive disposition and the unpretentious, respect toward his party elders, and publicly displayed affection to his mother, and sister only solidified the perception of a person with Positive Intent.

His actions just prior to the elections further solidified the trust in him by ‘Demonstrating Relevant Competence’ embellished his actions. The first of these was ‘Accepting Responsibility,’ when he took on the ruling government alone on difficult issues that truly mattered to the country. His ability to deliver hard-hitting points with crystal-clear communication bolstered his ‘Perceived Competence’ and ‘Commanding Respect.’ The final behavior of this third foundation of Trust is ‘External Appearance,’ which builds through a broad range of aspects like fitting the (future) role, his charm, and charisma, the last two of which he has in abundance.

While Rahul Gandhi may not have studied Trust the way TRA has scientifically, I contend that he does not need to. His intrinsic and natural behaviors are perfectly suited to a person who has the ability to create, maintain, and gain the trust of the citizens, an aspect which has become more and more evident since the start of the election phases of 2024.
