New Delhi: The Internet and Mobile Association of India (IAMAI) has launched the E-Commerce Council of India (ECCI), a national industry platform aimed at fostering collaboration between businesses, policymakers and other stakeholders to support the growth of India’s digital commerce ecosystem.
The initiative comes as India’s digital commerce market, estimated at over $120 billion, expands beyond online retail to include marketplaces, mobility, travel technology, logistics, digital payments, direct-to-consumer (D2C) brands, exporters, cross-border trade and AI-driven commerce.
According to IAMAI, the council will focus on policy advocacy, research, industry collaboration and the development of best practices to strengthen India’s digital commerce landscape while promoting innovation, consumer trust and ease of doing business.
Addressing the launch event, economist Dr. Laveesh Bhandari said, “The next phase of growth for India’s e-commerce sector will depend not just on innovation, but also on collaboration. The industry must come together and speak in a common voice on key policy issues. Such a move will enable more informed policymaking, greater regulatory certainty, and a conducive business environment that supports sustainable growth while delivering greater value to consumers, sellers and the broader economy.”
The ECCI brings together companies across the digital commerce value chain, including Amazon, Flipkart, Swiggy, Eternal, IndiaMART, MakeMyTrip, Ixigo, Uber, Rapido, Shiprocket, Transport Corporation of India Limited (TCIL), eBay, Meesho and Tata 1mg.
The council will work across several strategic areas, including product and service e-commerce, cross-border digital trade, logistics and supply chains, mobility, MSME enablement, travel technology, digital payments, responsible commerce, artificial intelligence and emerging technologies.
Explaining the objectives of the ECCI, Dr. Subho Ray, President, IAMAI, said, “Digital commerce has become one of the defining pillars of India’s digital economy. It is transforming how businesses operate, how consumers access products and services, and how Indian enterprises participate in domestic and global markets. The next phase of growth will depend on sustained collaboration between industry and government to build an ecosystem that is innovative, trusted and globally competitive. The E-Commerce Council of India has been established with this vision. It will serve as a collaborative platform for industry stakeholders to engage with policymakers, generate research, develop best practices and contribute to policy discussions that shape the future of digital commerce in India.”
As part of its long-term roadmap, the council plans to organise an annual Indian E-Commerce Summit (IECS), bringing together representatives from government, industry, academia and the global digital commerce community to discuss the future of digital commerce and digital trade in India.
The launch of the ECCI reflects IAMAI’s efforts to create a unified industry platform that can facilitate dialogue on policy, innovation and regulatory issues as India’s digital commerce ecosystem continues to evolve.
