Mumbai: OpenAI has named Prabhjeet Singh, currently President of Uber India and South Asia, as its Managing Director for India, strengthening its leadership team as the artificial intelligence company accelerates its expansion in one of its fastest-growing markets.
Singh will join OpenAI in September and report to Kiran Mani, Managing Director for Asia Pacific. In his new role, he will oversee the company’s consumer and enterprise businesses, strategic partnerships, regulatory engagement, and overall operations in India.
The appointment comes as OpenAI looks to deepen its presence in the country by expanding collaborations across businesses, institutions, and the public sector. The company said Singh will play a key role in supporting India’s AI ecosystem while driving wider adoption of artificial intelligence solutions across industries.
Singh brings more than a decade of leadership experience at Uber, having joined the ride-hailing company in 2015 as General Manager and Head of Strategy. He was elevated to President of India and South Asia in 2020 and most recently led Uber’s mobility business across India, Sri Lanka, and Bangladesh.
Earlier, Uber confirmed that Singh would be stepping down to pursue another leadership opportunity.
Commenting on his departure, an Uber spokesperson said, “We thank Prabhjeet for his leadership and lasting contributions in his decade-long journey with Uber. We remain deeply committed to our next phase of growth in India.”
Singh’s appointment comes at a time when OpenAI is expanding its global footprint and strengthening regional leadership to support growing enterprise demand and the rapid adoption of generative AI technologies. India has emerged as a strategic market for the company, with increasing adoption of AI across enterprises, startups, education, and government initiatives.
With Singh at the helm of its India operations, OpenAI is expected to further strengthen its local partnerships, scale commercial operations, and deepen engagement with policymakers as the company seeks to accelerate responsible AI adoption across the country.
