Tushar Vyas Exits WPP After 25 Years, to Focus on Academia, Startups, and Social Impact

Mumbai: Tushar Vyas, Chief Strategy Officer at WPP India, has announced his departure from the global communications conglomerate after a distinguished 25-year career. Vyas shared the news on LinkedIn, marking the end of a remarkable journey that began in 1999 and spanned some of the most transformative decades in India’s media and marketing industry.

A Career Built Across India’s Media Landscape

Vyas began his career with Mindshare in 1999, joining as National Director at a time when India’s media industry was undergoing rapid structural change. His early years were defined by building national-scale capabilities in one of the country’s most competitive media environments.

In 2004, he moved to GroupM as National Director – Interaction, taking on responsibility for the group’s digital and interactive offerings — a prescient move at a time when digital media was still finding its footing in India.

A Strategic Detour — and a Defining Return

Between 2007 and 2010, Vyas stepped outside the WPP ecosystem to serve as Director and Chief Marketing Officer at SureWaves, a broadcast technology company working at the intersection of media and distribution. The three-year stint gave him exposure to the startup and technology side of media, an experience that would inform much of his subsequent thinking.

He returned to GroupM in 2010 as Managing Partner – South Asia, and over the following decade and a half, steadily rose through the ranks, taking on expanded strategic mandates and senior leadership roles before assuming the position of Chief Strategy Officer at WPP India.

What Comes Next

In his LinkedIn post, Vyas described his next chapter as one of purpose and curiosity. “I’m excited to dedicate my energy to academia, the startup and innovation ecosystem, and the social impact sector,” he wrote, adding that these are areas that have “long sparked my curiosity and align closely with my future goals.”

The move reflects a broader trend of senior marketing and media executives pivoting toward mentorship, institution-building, and impact-driven work after long corporate tenures.

Vyas expressed deep gratitude to colleagues, clients, and partners across his career. “WPP has been much more than a workplace. It has been a place of learning, growth, friendships, challenges, opportunities, and unforgettable experiences,” he noted.
