Weekend Rewind: Asia Cup, Double Decker, INDIA ‘Boycott’, Nipah Virus, One Year of Mahsa Amini

Asia Cup

One of the craziest finishes in the ODIs!

Sri Lanka came out on top of Pakistan and knocked them out of Asia Cup…!!! pic.twitter.com/QcQTFpeRaM

To be very honest 'twas very brave and clear call from Rohit Sharma, who selflessly without thinking about his win streak in ODI #AsiaCup gave chance to benched players for match practice, and Rahul Dravid to miss out on senior players.

The fan armies are out. Rohit Sharma’s. Shubman Gill’s. Kuldeep Yadav’s. Virat Kohli’s. All with good reason. India take on a depleted Sri Lanka in the final on Sunday. Despite the loss against Bangladesh, the Indian team has managed to stoke interest with some gritty performances and decisions. All of India and Sri Lanka will be praying for the rain gods to shower their blessings and not a downpour. As will the broadcasters and advertisers.

Double Decker

You need not have lived in Mumbai to recall this icon of the city. The BEST Double Decker that was seen in many a movie, also consciously to establish the city. The times are changing. Electric is in and that’s a good thing. But these red rubies will be missed.

INDIA ‘Boycott’

I strongly support and hope INDIA will win the 2024 elections. The BJP must be defeated.

I do not support boycott of TV anchors or for that matter, TV channels either. In a democracy, it is important to engage even with the most hostile, or a jaundiced media.

That’s my view.

— Sanjay Jha (@JhaSanjay) September 14, 2023

Listen to this brilliant reply by Congress leader Randeep Singh Surjewala Ji on the boycott of anchors by Congress and the INDIA alliance.

He said we are just refusing to engage, they can do whatever they like, we are not stopping the channel then how is it an attack on Freedom… pic.twitter.com/vDz8Opv7F3

— Shantanu (@shaandelhite) September 15, 2023

#ExpressView | TV anchors with hateful tongues, on bended knee, need to be called out. But INDIA's boycott list whips up a mob, threatens press freedom. It should gohttps://t.co/TPCj0gFQO6

— The Indian Express (@IndianExpress) September 15, 2023

We are not taking sides. But informed opinion suggests that there is merit in the INDIA alliance calling out journalists and anchors who have taken ‘point of view’ journalism to a new extreme to align with one narrative. When that is the narrative of the establishment, the media isn’t performing its fiduciary duty in democracy. Opinion also suggests that the ‘boycott’ call should have been avoided. Whether it is to sell shows (bring in the viewers) or appease the establishment, if the approach of taking a side works for a news brand – so be it. It is not uncommon for people to avoid certain media appearances and they may have their own reasons, basis rationale or in self-interest. But was the decision to stay off shows with such a statement of intent necessary? It is not good for the media and sets an unhealthy precedent to put it mildly. Even if it is the media’s own doing. One can only hope that the few media outlets who have so far refused to take a side remain at the centre of it all, at all costs.

Nipah Virus

VIDEO | "So far, three samples have tested positive for Nipah virus. Since yesterday, we have started contact tracing and 706 people are in the contact list. Out of 706, 77 people are at high risk," says Kerala Health minister Veena George on #NipahVirus outbreak in the state. pic.twitter.com/geImlzDSPf

— Press Trust of India (@PTI_News) September 13, 2023

Nipah virus is more fatal than Covid 19, there is no vaccination or primary treatment option available, only preventive measures can save lives.#NipahVirus #NipahOutBreak #nipahvirusprevention #MedTwitter #medicine

The fourth outbreak of a virus, that is more deadly than Covid according to authoritative sources, has hit Kerala. Educational institutions in Kozhikode are shut. India has sought doses of antibody vaccine from Australia. Not surprisingly, not too many prime time shows in English or Hindi are turning their attention down South to the Nipah outbreak. Priorities.

Mahsa  Amini

Her name was #MahsaAmini.

A 22-year old young woman. Killed a year ago in the most brutal of manners.

Her murder triggered a movement #WomenLifeFreedom that is making history.

We remember her.
We honour her legacy.
We stand with those fighting for freedom in #Iran. pic.twitter.com/50zjHxqKQc

#Iran's rulers have intensified a clampdown on dissent one year since the death in police custody of #MahsaAmini sparked protests that spiraled into some of the worst political turmoil since the 1979 Islamic Revolution.#WorldNews https://t.co/kGTcBtB4fH

Immediate family member: #MahsaAmini father was taken away this morning and threatened not to hold any event on the first anniversary and he was brought home. #JinaAmini pic.twitter.com/wqmoY5Fedq

— Fazel Hawramy (@FazelHawramy) September 16, 2023

One year. September 16, 2023 marks a year of the ongoing protests in Iran and clampdown on the same by the ruling establishment. Scores of accounts of killings and torture of dissenters, and millions of voices across the world speaking up for the protestors, continue to flow. And they will, in all likelihood. It might be impossible to silence all the voices all across the world for whom #MahsaAmini has become a rallying cry.
