Bharti Airtel has approved the reappointment of its founder Sunil Bharti Mittal as chairman of the board for a fresh five-year term, extending his leadership at the telecom major until September 30, 2031.
The decision was cleared by the company’s board following a recommendation from its HR and Nomination Committee, according to a regulatory filing. Mittal’s new term will begin on October 1, 2026, immediately after the completion of his current tenure, which was set to end on September 30, 2026. The reappointment remains subject to shareholder approval.
Mittal, who founded the Bharti Group in 1976, has overseen its transformation from a domestic enterprise into a diversified global conglomerate with interests spanning telecom, digital infrastructure, financial services and space communications. His continued leadership comes at a time when Airtel is navigating rapid shifts in India’s telecom and digital ecosystem.
In a parallel move, the board also approved the reappointment of Nisaba Godrej as an independent director for a second consecutive term of five years. Her renewed tenure will run from August 4, 2026, to August 3, 2031, subject to shareholder consent.
The twin reappointments signal continuity in leadership at Airtel as it sharpens focus on next-generation connectivity, digital services and global expansion.
